As recorded in the Bible – People baptized: in the name of “The Lord Jesus Christ” |
On the day of Pentecost and since, we have seen in the Bible that many people were baptised in this way, and many others performed and witnessed these baptisms. As already noted in the previous section, there is no evidence in the Bible of anybody ever being baptised in any other way.
Where one or other of the titles may not have been recorded at the time of baptism, it should not be seen as evidence that the word was not used at the time, but merely that the word was not recorded in the Bible, as the author knew that the immediate readership understood the common abbreviations used throughout the church then – and still used even now. In other words, the phrases “in the name of the Lord”, “in the name of the Lord Jesus”, “in the name of Jesus”, and “in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ” are effectively recording the same phrase. As we saw in Isaiah 28v10: “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:” – this was also further explained in section {70}.
The people that we have seen or can imply were baptised in this way include the following:
The people that performed and witnessed or implied these baptisms include the following:
Peter and the 120 present in the upper room on the day of Pentecost {56} {57}
The Apostle Paul {68} {70} {73} {74} {75} {77} {78} {79} {80} {81} {82} {83} {85} {86} {87} {89}
When we look at these lists, and realise that these people are not likely to stray from using the name of Jesus in baptism once it was revealed to them, we can then see that the whole of the church recorded in the Bible must have been baptised “in the name of The Lord Jesus Christ”. To follow a biblical example we must also be baptised in the same way – only then can we claim to truly follow in the teaching and doctrines of the Apostles before us.
