Acts 1v22 |
Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. |

In this passage, from Acts 1v15-26, Peter stood up among the disciples (about 120 of them, v15) to suggest that the office of Judas should have a replacement. What is interesting is that there were others apart from the twelve disciples (also called Apostles by Jesus in Luke 6v13) that had been followers of Jesus right from the time of His baptism by John the Baptist – one of these was to be ordained to be a witness of the resurrection along with the other eleven.
Clearly the number twelve was important to the point that another had to be appointed in the place of Judas – in fact, numbers are very important to God. Whether it is the number of hairs on your head (Matthew 10v30), the number of tribes of Israel, the number of foundations for the new Jerusalem (Revelation 21v14), or anything else, God has it all numbered. There is of course even the book in the Bible simply called Numbers.
If there were not twelve Apostles, the foundations for New Jerusalem (Revelation 21v14), named after the Apostles, would have been eleven and lopsided rather than the twelve that we shall see when it is revealed.
