John 4v2

(Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

We found out in the previous section that the ministry of Jesus was producing more baptised disciples than John the Baptist. This verse lets us know however that it was not Jesus Himself administering the baptism, but His disciples were the ones actually taking the newly repentant into the water. Paul followed this example later, as seen in 1st Corinthians 1v14-17 {80} {81} {82} {83}. The person administering the baptism is seen as less important, as long as the teaching that leads them to being baptised is correct – no doubt the teaching of Jesus was correct.

Let us also see here something that was obvious to the writer – perhaps so obvious that it wasn’t mentioned here. Can there be any doubt that if Jesus was baptised, and His disciples baptised people under His ministry, that His disciples must have been baptised also, even before the day of Pentecost? I don’t believe that there is any room to believe otherwise.
