John 3v26 |
And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him. |

To understand this verse in it’s context, we need to also look at the previous verse, which says: “Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.” (John 3v25). Clearly the ministry of John was about purifying – repentance and water coming together to lead to remission of sins (Mark 1v4 {18}, Luke 3v3 {30}), but the question arose about who was anointed to preach such a message – was it exclusively John’s message, or could another (such as Jesus) preach it also? From the start of John’s answer in verse 28, we can see that some of these were the same messengers sent by the Pharisees in John 1v19-28 {43} {44} {45}. The Jewish authorities knew what John had previously said about Jesus, but wanted to know whether He had a mandate to administer baptism for purification. John the Baptist here again says many things about Jesus in answer to the questions that the Jews posed to him. The following list continues the previous one of things that John the Baptist revealed about Jesus, as already seen in section {47}:
What Jesus had came from heaven, and what He administered was from heaven also (v27)
John was sent before the Christ (v28)
Jesus is the bridegroom, and John rejoiced greatly to hear His voice (v29)
The bridegroom – Jesus – has the bride (v29)
Jesus ministry was set to increase, and John’s was set to decrease (v30)
Jesus came from above – heaven – and is above all, while John saw himself as earthly (v31).
What Jesus has seen and heard in heaven is what He tells the world of, but all men reject His testimony. (v32)
He that receives the testimony of Jesus testifies that God is true. He receives this testimony by setting a seal on it. (v33)
It is God that sent Jesus (v34)
Jesus speaks the words of God (v34)
Jesus doesn’t have God’s Spirit by measure (v34) where previous prophets (including John the Baptist himself) did.
The Father loves the Son, and gives authority over everything to Him (v35, see also John 1v29-34 {46} {47})
There is a choice each person has – believe in Jesus and have everlasting life – or don’t believe, and have the wrath of God (v36)
While showing how far Jesus was above himself and his own ministry, John showed that Jesus had power and authority way in excess of John’s own, with more of the Holy Spirit and a closer communication with the Father.
