John 3v33

After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

As we can see from this verse, it was not only John the Baptist that was baptising people, but Jesus and His disciples also baptised. I have heard it argued that ‘baptism is not important for salvation’, but if this were true, why would Jesus do it – not just to himself, but to others also? If Jesus is to be our example and guide (1st Peter 2v21), who are we to not follow His leading? If Jesus taught His disciples to baptise people, showing that it has value, how can anybody that believes in the authority of the scriptures hold a view that baptism is not important?

We have already seen that the forerunner to our Saviour – John the Baptist – saw the importance of baptism, and Jesus himself was baptised. At this early point in Jesus’ ministry we already see Him baptising others, and as we study further we will see just how important baptism was to become in Jesus’ thinking.
