Luke 12v50 |
But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! |
|
This verse comes in a passage where Jesus is speaking generally about the future of the kingdom of God, and His own part in it. In the previous verse, Jesus said “I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?” (Luke 12v49) Jesus seems to be talking about the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost/Spirit first promised by John the Baptist (Matthew 3v11 {4}, Mark 1v8 {20}, Luke 3v16 {33}) – this becomes even more likely as straight away He is then talking about His own baptism.
Jesus is to walk His own narrow path, just as we are called to do (Matthew 7v13). His path is in order to accomplish His future baptism – His death, burial and resurrection – which we become participants in through our own baptism. We identify with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus through our own baptism. For a more detailed discussion of this, see also Romans 6v4 {78} and Colossians 2v12 {89}.
