Mark 10v38

But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

This scripture is almost the same as that already seen in Matthew 20v22 {14 }.

Just prior to this verse, James and John came to request of Jesus that they could be seated on His left and right hand in heaven (v35). This verse is the start of the answer to this request.

Notice the assumption behind the request – that Jesus will be enthroned in Heaven. Also notice the belief that they could come to Jesus and ask boldly for things that are quite plainly out of this world. Both of these beliefs were in fact correct, so that Jesus did not have to rebuke James and John about them. Their faith had grown to such an extent that they had managed to find one of the very few things – if not the only one – that Jesus could not grant (v40).
