Matthew 3v13 |
Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. |
Just as others had gone to see John the Baptist, Jesus also made the journey to the river Jordan, and desired to be baptized by John.
Jesus did many things as an example to us (see John 13v15 and 1st Peter 2v21) and even suffered many things on our behalf. If our Saviour and example was baptized, who are we to refuse or suggest that we don’t need it? If there is any suffering to be found in baptism, then our example made sure that He led the way for us.
Baptism is something that Jesus did to His flesh, signifying on the outside what was to happen to the believer on the inside.
This verse is the first of three found within this chapter which mention the baptism of Jesus. For a further explanation of the events around this, see also the next two sections.
